THE HISTORY OF KIAFIA / IOTA CHAPTERs

OF

SOUTH CARLOINA STATE UNVERISTY

I.D.G.A.F / ETA’ BA

In spring 1979, the 17th Chapter of W.I.N.E Psi Phi Social Fraternity, Inc was founded at South Carolina State College.  It was given the name KIAFIA. The founder Nathaniel Fowler (Boston College’75) and the “8 Original Winesmen + 1” decided that they did not want the chapter’s name to be after a wine product due to the negative connotations that it might have on the chapter. The chapter’s name was conceptualized from the Danish wine’s “Cherry Kijafa” name; however, the brothers of W.I.N.E changed the spelling to the word KIAFIA in all caps. The chapter’s name will always be written out in this manner... (all Caps).  With this strong name in place this would be the beginning of the chapter’s history at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, S.C. The WINEs of KIAFIA chapter wanted to be perceived as positive light and initiating new experiences at the college campus.

Our next venture was to bring our sister chapter of Beta Phi Burgundy Sorority, Inc onto the campus of South Carolina State College. There were 20 women who started the journey and only 15 beautiful women decided to join the “IDGAF Sensation” at the campus. They believed in our concept of being a social Fraternity and Sorority entering the ranks of a traditional and heavily weighted Greek oriented campus. There line name “The 15 Blackberries of KIAFIA” was given to them by brother Mitchell Williams one of KIAFIA’s original charter member.  The brothers of WINEs now had Sisters and they were established as IOTA chapter; the 12th chapter of Beta Phi Burgundy Sorority, Inc.

In  keeping with our nation’s early motto: E pluribus unum  - The motto originally suggesting that out of many colonies or states emerge a single nation; The WINEs and BETAs Chapters were starting to emerge as single nation of Burgundy and Blue - Burgundy and Pink on S. C. State campus.  Ironically South Carolina State University’s school colors were Garnet and Blue; so you see W.I.N.E Psi Phi Social Fraternity was meant to be…

“…then out of one ….many have come into to being”

Our founder‘s (Nathaniel “Kiafia” Fowler) next goal was to spread W.I.N.E Psi Phi Social Fraternity, Inc throughout the state of South Carolina. The first spread of W.I.N.E was done by Brother Darrell Nerring (Ten Most Wanted) who transferred to Benedict College in Columbia, S.C. after pledging Fall ’80.  He saw fit to continue the legacy of W.I.N.E Psi Phi Social Fraternity, Inc and he established the 18th Chapter of W.I.N.E Psi Phi Social Fraternity in 1980 the “Rose’ Chapter” at the Benedict’s College campus with 10 young eager men.

The overall 19th Chapter of W.I.N.E Psi Phi Social Fraternity, Inc was established by Wendell “Dell” Lyons as “DELLA SCALLA” chapter in 1983 on Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina.
